2005-2006 SEASON EVALUATION

Calling all Foxes! Please take a moment to e-mail or mail the 2005-2006 season evaluation form to Suzy Ballantyne with your thoughts to improve the program for next year.

A BLAST IN BURLINGTON

Hey Foxes,

What a great weekend for the Foxes up in Burlington! The Travel Team came in 3rd in the "C" Division and the Rec Team won the Novice Division despite facing the loss of two players after the opening game (1 to injury and 1 at the expense of the tournament director). We wish Maura well as she recouperates from her broken ankle and want to thank Sam for cheering us on and giving us loads of support from the sidelines. Great effort by both teams and it was great to have fans at all the games with lots of Foxes pride.

THIRD ANNUAL CROSS-CHECKING COLON CANCER WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT

tournament logo

The Third Annual Cross-Checking Colon Cancer Women's Ice Hockey Tournament took place November 4-6, 2005 at the Clifton Park Ice Arena in Clifton Park, NY. This USA Hockey sanctioned tournament was dedicated to the memory of Christopher J. Riedy, brother of Arctic Fox Antoinette O'Donnell, who passed away on January 27, 2001 at the young age of 46 of stage IV colon cancer. Over $7,600 was raised to benefit The Colon Club, a New York State nonprofit organization with federal 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, founded by Molly McMaster, a 29 year-old colon cancer survivor and fellow Arctic Fox. Molly's goal is to educate as many people as possible, as early as possible, about colorectal cancer in interesting and "out-of-the-box" methods since it is a disease that many people find difficult to talk about. "Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, yet it's one of the only cancers you can actually test for and remove before it even starts," Molly says. "Just get a colonoscopy to remove any polyps before they turn into cancer. It's so easy and it would save many lives if people would just get past the embarrassment." For her work, she received the 2001 American Cancer Society's Hope, Progress, Answers Award, the Adirondack Athlete of the Year, the 2002 Rotary Citizen of the Year, the 2003 Colon Cancer Alliance "Voices" Award, the 2003 Colorectal Cancer Network's "90 in 9" Advocacy Award, the Memorial Sloan-Kettering's 2003 Tavel-Reznik Award for excellence in cancer awareness and education, has appeared on NBC's Today Show with Katie Couric, and her story has been featured on the cover of American Hockey Magazine and on the USA Hockey web site. She has inline skated across the country, carried the Olympic torch, and told her story through hundreds of television shows, print articles, and speeches. She has been on the Board of Directors of the Colon Cancer Alliance since 2003. Molly's brainchild, the Colossal Colon, is a 40-foot long, 4-foot tall model of the human colon. "CoCo" has been traveling around the country since 2002 to educate people of all ages about colorectal cancer. Molly's latest projects are the 2006 Colondar, a 12 month calendar featuring young men and women who have survived colorectal cancer after being diagnosed before the age of 50, and the Rollin' Colon, a combination of the Colossal Colon and the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile, a vehicle that looks like a human colon inside and out.

This year's tournament showcased six teams in the USA Hockey Senior B Division, eight teams in the USA Hockey Senior C Division, and two exhibition games. The USA Hockey Senior B Division featured the Chesapeake Bay Lightning, Hudson River Waves, Long Island Liberty, New York Raiders, Syracuse Warriors, and Team Connecticut. The USA Hockey Senior C Division featured the Adirondack Avalanche, Arctic Foxes, Northern Lightning (Burlington, VT), Orlando Sirens, Rhode Island Panthers, Rome Grizzlies, Saratoga Storm, and Waterbury Ice Storm. Each team played three games with the top two teams in each division advancing to the championship. The Arctic Foxes Rec Team faced off in two exhibition games against the Rhode Island Panthers Rec Team.

A huge THANK YOU to all the teams, sponsors, officials, volunteers, vendors, and fans for making this event a tremendous success.

Teams and sponsors interested in participating in next year's 4th Annual Cross-Checking Colon Cancer Women's Ice Hockey Tournament may contact tournament director Lisa Soeller for further information.
