DATES
ANNOUNCED FOR The 6th Annual Cross-Checking Colon Cancer Women's Ice Hockey Tournament will take place November 7-9, 2008, at the Clifton Park Ice Arena in Clifton Park, NY. This USA Hockey sanctioned tournament benefits The Colon Club, a New York State nonprofit organization with federal 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, co-founded by Molly McMaster, a 31 year-old colon cancer survivor and fellow Arctic Fox. The Colon Club is dedicated to raising awareness of colorectal cancer in interesting and "out-of-the-box" methods since it is a disease that many people find difficult to talk about. Its goals are to educate as many people as possible, as early as possible, about the risk factors and symptoms of colorectal cancer, and for people to get screened when it's appropriate for them. "Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, yet it's one of the only cancers you can actually test for and remove before it even starts," Molly says. "Just get a colonoscopy to remove any polyps before they turn into cancer. It's so easy and it would save many lives if people would just get past the embarrassment." For her work, she received the 2001 American Cancer Society's Hope, Progress, Answers Award, the Adirondack Athlete of the Year, the 2002 Rotary Citizen of the Year, the 2003 Colon Cancer Alliance "Voices" Award, the 2003 Colorectal Cancer Network's "90 in 9" Advocacy Award, the Memorial Sloan-Kettering's 2003 Tavel-Reznik Award for excellence in cancer awareness and education, has appeared on NBC's Today Show with Katie Couric, and her story has been featured on the cover of American Hockey Magazine and on the USA Hockey web site. She has inline skated across the country, carried the Olympic torch, skated with each team in the United Hockey League during “The UHL Cross-Checks Colon Cancer,” the UHL’s 2006 campaign for National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and told her story through hundreds of television shows, print articles, and speeches. She has been on the Board of Directors of the Colon Cancer Alliance since 2003. Molly's brainchild, the Colossal Colon, is a 40-foot long, 4-foot tall model of the human colon. "CoCo" has been traveling around the country since 2002 to educate people of all ages about colorectal cancer. Molly's latest projects include asking people to “Wipe Out Colorectal Cancer” with innovative new toilet paper that will include the “Wipe Out Colorectal Cancer” message as well as facts and information about colorectal cancer; the 2008 Colondar, a 12 month calendar featuring young men and women who have survived colorectal cancer after being diagnosed before the age of 50; and the Rollin' Colon, a combination of the Colossal Colon and the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile, a vehicle that looks like a human colon inside and out. This year's tournament will showcase six teams in the USA Hockey Senior B Division, six teams in the USA Hockey Senior C Division, and four teams in the USA Hockey Senior Recreation Division. Teams interested in participating in this year's 6th Annual Cross-Checking Colon Cancer Women's Ice Hockey Tournament can see the following article for new registration information. Sponsors interested in helping us "cross-check colon cancer" at this year's 6th Annual Cross-Checking Colon Cancer Women's Ice Hockey Tournament may contact tournament director Heidi Bonner for further information and sponsorship opportunities. NEW
TOURNAMENT REGISTRATION POLICY Due to the overwhelming success of the Annual Cross-Checking Colon Cancer Women's Ice Hockey Tournament, the need for a new registration policy has arisen. No registrations were accepted at the 2007 5th Annual Cross-Checking Colon Cancer Women's Ice Hockey Tournament for entry into the 2008 tournament. Registration for the 2008 tournament opened on January 1, 2008. Teams interested in attending must submit a Lottery Registration Form and a $100 deposit. Registration will be closed on May 31, 2008. All teams that have submitted a registration form and a $100 dollar deposit will be randomly chosen for entry into the 2008 tournament starting with the B division, continuing with the C division, and concluding with the Rec division. If a team has entries in more than one division, all teams will be allowed to play. For example, if Team X is selected for the B Division, Team X's C team will be automatically chosen to play in the C Division. In this way, we avoid splitting up multi-divisional teams. Once all slots in a division are filled, we will continue drawing names to determine the waiting list. Deposits will be promptly returned to any team on the waiting list. If a division has not filled by May 31, 2008, registrations will be accepted until the division is filled. We look forward to seeing you in November! 5TH ANNUAL CROSS-CHECKING COLON CANCER WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT A SUCCESS The 5th Annual Cross-Checking Colon Cancer Women's Ice Hockey Tournament took place November 2-4, 2007 at the Clifton Park Ice Arena in Clifton Park, NY. Each year, our tournament is dedicated to someone special who has battled colorectal cancer under the stereotypical age of 50. Last year, it was dedicated to Kim Troisi-Paton for the courage she showed in her fight against colon cancer. Kim recently lost her battle, and, because she is so special to us, we dedicated this year's tournament to her memory. Many of you may remember meeting Kim at the tournament in 2006. She was a lawyer and mother of two from Colonie, NY, who was diagnosed at age 35 with stage III colon cancer. Kim had the strength to stand up to reluctant doctors and wanted others to have the courage to take charge of their own health care and get answers when they know that something is wrong. We miss her terribly and will never forget her. This year, our USA Hockey sanctioned tournament raised over $7,000.00 to benefit The Colon Club. This year's tournament showcased six teams in the USA Hockey Senior B Division, six teams in the USA Hockey Senior C Division, and four teams in the USA Hockey Senior Recreation Division. The USA Hockey Senior B Division featured the Buffalo Saints, EC Raiders, Hudson River Waves, Green Mountain Girls, Philadelphia Freeze, and Syracuse Warriors. The USA Hockey Senior C Division featured the Adirondack Avalanche, Arctic Foxes, Rhode Island Panthers, Rome Grizzlies, Saratoga Storm, and Vermont Sting. The USA Hockey Senior Recreation Division featured the Arctic Foxes, Messa Mustangs, Syracuse Blades, and Westchester Ice Breakers. Each team played three games, with the top two teams in each division advancing to the championship. A huge THANK YOU to all the teams, sponsors, officials, volunteers, vendors, and fans for making this event a tremendous success. RESULTS

The following is an excerpt from The Sporting News' hockey expert Kara Yorio's column "Exclusive Analysis", June 11, 2003: "Support your teammates; don't turn on them. Don't harp on the problems of an individual for the failure of the team...They have to pull together on the ice. That's all...If they work together, then maybe they'll win." |
