ANNUAL CROSS-CHECKING COLON CANCER The 6th Annual Cross-Checking Colon Cancer Women's Ice Hockey Tournament took place November 7-9, 2008, at the Clifton Park Ice Arena in Clifton Park, NY. This USA Hockey sanctioned tournament benefited The Colon Club, a New York State nonprofit organization with federal 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, co-founded by Molly McMaster, a 31-year-old colon cancer survivor and fellow Arctic Fox. The 6th Annual Cross-Checking Colon Cancer Women's Ice Hockey Tournament was being played in honor of 33-year-old colon cancer survivor Andrew Elder of Ballston Spa, NY. Andrew was diagnosed in July of 2007 and is the lead singer of local band Big Nixon, who recently played at Larkfest in Albany, NY. This year, our USA Hockey sanctioned tournament raised over $6,400.00 to benefit The Colon Club. This year's tournament showcased six teams in the USA Hockey Senior B Division, six teams in the USA Hockey Senior C Division, and four teams in the USA Hockey Senior Rec Division. The tournament also held two USA Hockey Senior Rec Division exhibition games. The USA Hockey Senior B Division featured the EC Raiders, Green Mountain Girls, Hudson River Waves, Philadelphia Freeze, Syracuse Warriors, and Team Connecticut. The USA Hockey Senior C Division featured the Arctic Foxes, Rhode Island Panthers, Saratoga Storm, Syracuse Blades, Team Connecticut(+30), and Vermont Sting. The USA Hockey Senior Rec Division featured the Arctic Foxes, Rhode Island Panthers, Saratoga Storm, and Westchester Ice Breakers. Each team played three games with the top two teams in each division advancing to the championship. The USA Hockey Senior Rec Division exhibition games featured the Arctic Foxes and the Frozen Assets of Troy. A huge THANK YOU to all the teams, sponsors, officials, volunteers, vendors, and fans for making this event a tremendous success. Sponsors interested in helping us "cross-check colon cancer" at next year's 7th Annual Cross-Checking Colon Cancer Women's Ice Hockey Tournament may contact tournament director Heidi Bonner for further information and sponsorship opportunities.

FOXES 2ND ANNUAL Since it wasn't good enough for some Foxes to camp in light rain at Thompsons Lake in 2007, we decided to camp in a monsoon at Moreau in 2008! Sixteen Foxes and their families and friends set out on a brutally humid Friday afternoon for a outdoorsy experience not soon to be forgotten. After the tents were raised, the pop-ups were cranked, the fires were stoked, Sue Karp's toe stopped bleeding, the little ones were fed, and the teenagers were tied up, the adults had a lovely Friday evening around the campfire. Our vocal cords were hoarse due to having to shout over the snoring emanating from the Wall tent, but a good time was had by all. Saturday brought us a sunny, fabulous day so we all proceeded to the lake for a rambunctious game of Taboo (hint: if you play this game you don't want Billy Wall on your team and you do want Andrew Wein on your team - the man has a ton of useless information stored in his cranium). Molly and Karen Ellison scoffed at the park ranger who spoke of impending storms later in the day. Not possible on such a brilliant day. So we were wrong and the ranger was right. Saturday afternoon into the evening brought about 6 inches of punishing rain, driving winds and enough breaks in the rain to have us saying "I think that was the worst of it" several times - only to find out we were wrong again. Thankfully Jen Kelly had a radio and kept announcing that there was yet another storm coming - oh happy day! The rain did eventually pass, we still had some dry spots in our tents, some dry firewood and lots of cold beer - what else do you need for camping? Sheila Endres gets the trooper camper award for this year - Sheila had never camped before, borrowed a tent and 3 extra teenager (her 2 weren't enough), cooked over the campfire and made sure the kids didn't burn the place down! Good job Sheila. The rest of the Foxes to camp were Kim and Michelle Milton (we even bring them in from out of state), Jen Kelly, Jen Sheffer, Jess Lamp, Stacey Brown, Sue Karp, Jill Karp, Molly MacElroy, Karen Gowan, Karen Ellison, Melissa Wein, Melissa Fraley, Sarah Dakin, Sue Davis and Linda Wall. Add in husbands, boyfriends, girlfriends, brothers, sons, daughters, and dogs, and we had a crowd and a half! Moreau Lake State Park was a winner for the Foxes in 2008 (no pesky warden telling us to be quiet like they did at Thompsons Lake) and I'm pretty sure there will be a 3rd Annual Foxes Camping Trip in 2009. Hope to see even more Foxes next year. -as reported by Linda Wall 2007-2008

The following is an excerpt from The Sporting News' hockey expert Kara Yorio's column "Exclusive Analysis", June 11, 2003: "Support your teammates; don't turn on them. Don't harp on the problems of an individual for the failure of the team...They have to pull together on the ice. That's all...If they work together, then maybe they'll win." |
